What is a Red Horse Safari

Red Horse – derived from the Kiwi folk language:  “Red” meaning Honda and “Horse” meaning Farm Work Animal.  A derivative of the Manawatu agricultural dialect and now a commonly used term for Farm Quad.

The Red Horse Safaris are a Tour as opposed to a race or fast ride. They are designed for 4X4 Farm type Quads which are likely to have carriers, carrying boxes and excellent off road tyres.  Sports Quads are not welcome on Red Horse Safaris for three reasons.  1. They are usually too noisy.  2. The owners are usually racers or at the least hoons who do not fit the Red Horse psyche. 3. The sports quads have a very low ground clearance and get hooked up everywhere. So we don’t want them!  Two wheel drive Farm Quads may come if the rider is skillful and they have new and aggressive rear tyres.

Quads in the USA are 80% used for recreational purposes such at hunting, fishing, camping, tours and general exploring. In New Zealand they are 90% used for Farms or Lifestyle blocks.  The Red Horse Safaris provide an opportunity for 4X4 owners to use their quad in a fun and exciting way without going crazy or being hassled by racers or motorcycles.

Many of the Safari riders have tricked out their quads for exploring and most carry ropes, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, wet weather gear, warm clothing, snacks and water while the more enthusiastic Safari rider fits a winch, a GPS and carries a mobile phone. Some fit shovels and hand saws and it has even been known to see a small chainsaw in one carrier box.

The ethos is “One for all and all for One”. Everyone helps everybody else through any “tight” spots and through any problems that may occur. Experienced riders will drive a less experienced riders quad through a difficult spot or give advice on how best to tackle an obstacle. It’s all fun and a hell of a lot friendlier that a trail ride.

On the rides you will meet Brian and David.  These likely lads are a feature of the Red Horses and are now guides at many of the events. You can’t keep these guys away. Carol brings her own accommodation with her quad – a campervan. John travels hundreds of kilometers from New Plymouth for all the rides (we must find one down there John) and Celia has the oldest bike a Honda TRX300. Everyone has a great time.

Usually we have accommodation at the Safaris in the form of a lodge, model, hotel or hostels. The brave can camp if they like but it does get cold in the winter. Take Waimiha for instance. Where you say?  Well go to the middle of nowhere then travel a further hour and you are almost there. The Black Fern Lodge situated in the middle of this remote bush setting and is an epicurean delight with excellent rooms, sumptuous meals and a rustic bar with a raging open fire. Many lies have been told, reputations ruined and egos bruised at the Black Fern evenings. Usually the night before, these evenings are part of the Red Horse Safaris which are definitely a more refined experience over the normal trail ride.

PILLIONS ARE NOT ALLOWED

ALL RIDERS MUST BE 16 YEARS OR OVER

ROPS (Roll Bars) ARE NOT PERMITTED

There are no exceptions to this as safety is paramount at Power Adventures associated events. Please don’t ask for exemptions.

Our events calendar has all the proposed Red Horse Safari’s listed with alternative dates outlined as well.
